CFA UK is pleased to welcome the appointment of three new members to its Board following the Society’s AGM on 27 November 2018. The new members joining the board are Hilary Eastman, CFA, Gillian Elcock and Stephen Wackerle, CFA, FCA. At the meeting Daniel Murray, CFA was elected as new chair and Graham Cook, CFA as vice-chair.
Says Daniel Murray, CFA Deputy CIO and Global Head of Research at EFG Asset Management : ‘We are delighted to welcome Hilary, Gillian and Stephen to the Board, but we are very sorry to say goodbye to Gerry Fowler, CFA, Anne Marden, CFA, Stuart Fiertz, CFA and Alexandra Haggard, CFA Each has made a real contribution to our work. It is with special thanks to Gerry that the Society has made real progress with regard to improving the volunteer experience, something that is at the core of what we do. Anne has made a particular contribution to the work we do with policymakers and regulators whilst Alexandra and Stuart have provided invaluable input to the Advisory Council. As the new Board chair, I am looking forward to carrying on the excellent works of the Board and the Society. I am especially excited about the prospects of enhancing our exam and educations offering, something that is becoming increasingly important for individuals to manage their career paths as well from a regulatory perspective.’
Nominees for consideration by CFA UK’s members at the society’s AGM are selected by the society’s Nominating Committee. The committee considers the diversity of skills and experience that the Board requires and seeks to represent the diversity of the society’s membership.
On joining the CFA UK Board Hilary Eastman, CFA says. 'I'm excited about the opportunity to work with fellow Board members to help build trust in the investment profession and ensure society understands the important role finance brings to the economy.'
Gillian Elcock comments, 'I am looking forward to serving on the board of the CFA UK and helping to navigate both the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead.'
And, Stephen Wackerle, CFA, FCA adds, 'I am delighted to be joining the Board and am looking forward to working more closely together to help address the society’s risks and opportunities in way that delivers value to members and the investment profession.'
New CFA UK Board member biographies:
Hilary Eastman, CFA is PwC’s head of global investor engagement, managing the firm’s relationships with the investment community. In this role she seeks to understand their views on corporate reporting, regulation and governance to help companies improve their reporting to the capital markets. She also seeks their views on matters affecting the accounting profession. Hilary has volunteered with CFA UK since 2011, having served on the financial reporting and analysis committee and volunteering committee. she has also been involved in the value of the investment profession work, focusing on capital allocation. Hilary previously worked at the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), where she led their investor engagement programme and the fair value measurement project. She has a background in business and asset valuation.
Gillian Elcock is the Founder and Managing Director of Denny Ellison, an independent research and analyst training company. Prior to this, she worked as an equity research analyst for several years at Putnam Investments and Insight Investment. She started her career as a management consultant at The Boston Consulting Group. Gillian is currently vice chair of the CFA UK’s content and networks steering committee and has extensive volunteering experience with the society. Current and previous roles include chair of the SIG council, co-chair of the research analysts special interest group, member of the careers committee and member of the membership committee. She was awarded the CFA UK Volunteer of the Year Award in 2017. Gillian holds an MBA from the Harvard Business School and MEng and BSc degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is also an award-winning author.
Stephen Wackerle, CFA, FCA is Vice President, Group Risk at BP p.l.c. where he leads the analysis of the group’s risk profile and maintains the framework for managing and reporting risks globally from the group’s operations to the board. Stephen began his career in Moores Rowland (now Mazars) in external audit in South Africa and joined BP in 2001 after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant. He has held a variety of roles in regional and global risk, audit and assurance in South Africa, Germany and the UK. Stephen has also served in project roles associated with business integration and process improvement. Steve graduated from the University of Cape Town with a postgraduate diploma in accounting and was awarded his CFA Charter in 2006.
